ReplyDeleteI just wanted to write a big thank you for writing the beautiful Tyger. Tyger has become one of my favourite books. I am a Norwegian student currently studying an MPhil in children's literature at Cambridge. For my interview essay, I chose to write about Tyger. As fate would have it, a William Blake exhibition was on display at the Fitzwilliam museum when I visited Cambridge, and I kept thinking about its meaning related to Tyger!
I am now re-reading the book and I keep discovering so many new things about it. Thank you again, and best wishes,

As it happens, I studied at Cambridge myself, and that's where I wrote a number of drafts of my first book, Varjak Paw – so it means more than you can imagine to hear that a Cambridge MPhil student is writing about my work!
And I'm so glad that you're still discovering new things in Tyger. I'm currently working on a new book that's very much connected to it, so I hope you'll look out for that one day – I think you'll find all sorts of things that connect the two books.

ReplyDeleteI am a Primary 6 teacher based in Scotland. As a year group, we currently have 2 Primary 6 classes reading Varjak Paw. We have also used your text in our school for a number of years now. It is just wonderful, the children are so engaged and can't wait to read on. We have been introducing the Primary 6 children to reciprocal reading and used your text to help with this - each week we have introduced the children to a different reciprocal reading role and learnt what the role entails. We have read up to Chapter 17 and when we come back after the October break we plan to work in small groups, read a chapter, take on a role then, read the next chapter and the children rotate to a new role, allowing everyone to practice the different comprehension skills and learn from each other. We have also used your text to inspire our artwork - we have looked at one point perspective art (drawing a city) and experimented with chalk pastels and charcoal to create Varjak images. Theres lots more Literacy and Art activities to come too!
It would be great if we could organise a Virtual meet from yourself one day - the children would just love this. If possible can you send me some more information about this?

ReplyDeleteI recently bought a copy of Varjak Paw to give as a birthday gift for my friends daughter and it got me down memory lane. I used to have an aversion to reading to the point I was in special classes meant to help. It wasn't a disability, more of a lack or refusal. I have a vivid memory from when I was around eight years old, I'm 30 now. My teacher for one of those special classes questioned me on all my interests... cats, I loved cats and pretty much just cats. The next day she came in with Varjak Paw. I read that book in two days by myself. I still have that copy and cherish it. That book got me into reading because after that It was like a flood gate. I started reading everything and to this day a am constantly reading something. So thank you for the impact you've had on my life. It really made a difference.
